Water and Weather - Berlin

Image
For our water class we talked about the changing climate and how it impacts the world, and how sea levels are rising due to this. We were given an Action Project and our goal was to create a slideshow highlighting a country, while focusing on the effects of climate change. I randomly chose Berlin, and studied its temperature as well as how it could be affected by climate change. Berlin is the capital of Germany and is the second most populated city. It is known for the Berlin Wall, the Cold War, its landmarks, culture, and arts. Photo by JR Korpa on Unsplash Highest temp recorded +95 F Lowest temp recorded -11 F  Summer - around 72-75 F.  Winter - around 32 F  To convert F to Celsius, use the formula: c = 5/9 (f-32). 5/9 (-11-32) = 5/9 * (-43) =  -24 C. Therefor, the lowest recorded temperature in Berlin in celsius is -24.  I think the PPM levels will rise to about 1,000 - 2,000 in 2100 . Those levels are known for comp...

Building Better Communities

Image
For our school course, SDGs and you (Sustainable Development Goals), we looked at the goals presented by the United Nations, which were made to build a better way for people to know how to make the world more sustainable. There are many goals that all affect sustainability, such as gender equality and quality education, but I chose SDG eleven, which is the goal focused on sustainable cities and communities. I chose this SDG because I wanted to focus on a broader topic of sustainability and focus on cities and neighborhoods in general. Similar to a cone of ice cream on a summer day, the climate is melting. Large companies are mistreating the environment by dumping, deforesting, polluting, and destroying nature, and many other events are taking place that contribute to climate change. A solution to this is creating sustainable cities, neighborhoods, and communities. In order to do that, we need to work together. People in the community and organizations like One Tree Planted a...

Filter the Pain - Action Project

Image
For our water class in school, we studied water, it’s importance, and we also delved into science and math. Our class then looked into water filtering and made DIY drafts of water filters to prepare ourselves for our new Action Project - building a water filter. After learning more about math and science, the day came when we had to build our filters in class. Unfortunately, I wasn’t feeling well and had to miss out on that experience. One of the challenges was having to make up the time I missed by building a filter at home. For the filter, I had water with dirt and leaves in it. I tried taping paper towels to a cup with rice and a legging material, but it just made a mess in the water didn’t go through. I removed the legging but it still didn’t really work out and dirty water ended up spilling on the counter. My mom finally found a rectangular shaped colander-type thing with a handle which we thought would be good for the filter. Then I taped some paper towels to both sides, added s...

Breaking Binaries - Action Project

For our action project, we studied and looked into gender equality and how men and women are treated differently. After delving into the world of gender in the real world, we were tasked to each write an individual essay about a topic surrounding gender equality and an argument about your chosen topic. I wanted to something different from what others were doing for the project and address a wider range of people, so I chose gender non-binaries and compared how non-binary gender is viewed and addressed in the US vs in India. US and India Yes, gender inequality is a thing. Women are paid 77 cents per dollar that men make, according to the National Committee on Pay Equity. It’s not because they don’t work as hard or choose lower paying jobs. It’s because of gender inequality. But we should also be aware that it’s not just all about men and women. There are others, too. The world as we know it is just too binary. Pink and blue, boys and girls, men and women, cats and dogs, le...

Quality Education is a Right for All

Quality Education is a Right for All Lyd  Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a series of goals that the United Nations set to help achieve a better future for people and the planet. These goals address issues such as poverty, hunger, the environment, and education, and strive for sustainability. SDGs help us start to make changes for the better by separating different topics into different goals to better categorize issues and learn more about them. Goals also create a way for people to pinpoint where they aim to reach in the future. For our humanities class in school, we studied SDGs and global issues, and were asked to choose a goal to write about. I choose SDG 4: Quality Education, because that’s something I value and I wanted to focus on. Have you ever complained about school? Well, an education is necessary to be active and successful in the real world and to achieve things in life and helps kids be involved in the world and participate to make it a better p...

People and Water-Action Project

Image
For our Water class at the GCE Lab School, we learned about water, water usage and the ways people use water for different household uses, like cooking, cleaning, drinking, and hygiene. We also talked about access to water and how not everyone has it easily available to them. To build empathy for people with limited access to water, we were assigned to find a way to carry water from the river to the school. We went to the river and filled buckets, coolers, and bottles of river water, and carried it to our school. This helped build empathy because some people have to walk miles to find water; they can't just turn on the tap for drinking water, and we mimicked that experience for our class. The next thing we did was study our own water usage for an Action Project, a poster about water and our personal water usage, along with the average U.S individual's and a chosen country's (I chose Japan). The purpose of the poster is to raise awareness about water and water usage in a ...

Algebra Action Project-Inverse Property of Addition

Image
For our freshman algebra class, we are working on an Action Project where we chose one of the properties of algebra. I chose the Inverse Property of Addition, which means that any number added to its opposite will equal zero. A negative version of the same number is the opposite of the positive version, and vice versa. For example, 5 + -5= 0 . Properties are rules/characteristics of numbers and math that help us understand concepts in math. For the artistic aspect of the Action Project, I chose to do simple images representing examples of the Inverse Property of Addition. I have two versions of a similar image that both represent an example of my property. In addition, I found another way to convey the definition of my property, and all of my work is shown here. These images relate to my chosen property because they both give a simple example of an equation that fits into the Inverse Property of Addition. A negative number added by the positive version of that same number will equal ...
