Algebra Action Project-Inverse Property of Addition
For our freshman algebra class, we are working on an Action Project where we chose one of the properties of algebra. I chose the Inverse Property of Addition, which means that any number added to its opposite will equal zero. A negative version of the same number is the opposite of the positive version, and vice versa. For example, 5 + -5= 0 . Properties are rules/characteristics of numbers and math that help us understand concepts in math. For the artistic aspect of the Action Project, I chose to do simple images representing examples of the Inverse Property of Addition. I have two versions of a similar image that both represent an example of my property. In addition, I found another way to convey the definition of my property, and all of my work is shown here.
These images relate to my chosen property because they both give a simple example of an equation that fits into the Inverse Property of Addition. A negative number added by the positive version of that same number will equal zero, and vice versa. This works with any number. My images both depict my interpretation of opposites and opposite numbers, and the fact that adding the positive and the negative version of any given number will give you the number zero. This is all shown in an artistic manner with art that I have created, which is the point of the Action Project. This project crosses art with algebra and uses imagery to represent my chosen mathematical property.

This image represents the Inverse Property of Addition because it depicts a blue circle (the representation of the negative number) and the orange circle (the positive number), and in the middle is the number zero. Like blue and orange, negative and positive numbers, are opposites. If you take a single number and add its positive and negative version together, it will always equal zero.
Overall, this project was worthwhile and taught me about using art to express other things that people might not associate with being creative, and show people that anything can be expressed using art.
