For our water class in school, we studied water, it’s importance, and we also delved into science and math. Our class then looked into water filtering and made DIY drafts of water filters to prepare ourselves for our new Action Project - building a water filter. After learning more about math and science, the day came when we had to build our filters in class. Unfortunately, I wasn’t feeling well and had to miss out on that experience.
One of the challenges was having to make up the time I missed by building a filter at home. For the filter, I had water with dirt and leaves in it. I tried taping paper towels to a cup with rice and a legging material, but it just made a mess in the water didn’t go through. I removed the legging but it still didn’t really work out and dirty water ended up spilling on the counter. My mom finally found a rectangular shaped colander-type thing with a handle which we thought would be good for the filter. Then I taped some paper towels to both sides, added some rice to filter it more, as well as a thin legging material on the bottom. I taped the filter to a container on the bottom to collect water. At first I used blue tape, but my dad gave me stronger duct tape which I then used instead. Another challenge was the tape being stubborn and the filter dropped, which meant bits of dirt and rice were furthering contaminating the filtered water. I tried again and finally got the filter to work properly-ish (I had to hold the filter above the container for half of the time because the tape didn’t really work). Later, I quickly filtered the water (with just the colander) a few times to get some of the extra bits that were in the water.
In conclusion, the filter did filter water somewhat; it was still dirty but definitely not as much as before, so I count that as a success because I did put work in effort into it and overall it did filter some of the dirt. It was frustrating to get it to work, but in the end it was kind of a fun experience.
