Breaking Binaries - Action Project

For our action project, we studied and looked into gender equality and how men and women are treated differently. After delving into the world of gender in the real world, we were tasked to each write an individual essay about a topic surrounding gender equality and an argument about your chosen topic. I wanted to something different from what others were doing for the project and address a wider range of people, so I chose gender non-binaries and compared how non-binary gender is viewed and addressed in the US vs in India.

US and India
Yes, gender inequality is a thing. Women are paid 77 cents per dollar that men make,
according to the National Committee on Pay Equity.
It’s not because they don’t work as hard or choose lower paying jobs.
It’s because of gender inequality.
But we should also be aware that it’s not just all about men and women.
There are others, too. The world as we know it is just too binary.
Pink and blue, boys and girls, men and women, cats and dogs,
left handed or right handed. It’s all binary.
Some people just don’t fit into that. And that’s okay.
We should reshape our idea of gender equality to be more general and include everyone;
not just men and women.
This would address more issues and include more people instead of being exclusive.
If someone were to fill out a chart where they had more options instead of just male and
female or a chart that allowed the user to fill our their gender and their sex, it would
provide more truthful information than a chart with only two options.

In the year 2005, Indian passport application forms were updated to have three gender
options, and some Indian languages have three gender options.
This is an example of a country adapting to include more people.
Some states in the U.S have also adapted to this more recently,
offering the option X along with M and F for things
such as license plates and identification cards.

In conclusion, it would be more useful to the world
if more countries and states added and recognised a third gender option
(in place or along with sex options) and would help better identify people
to avoid conflict and/or humiliation and shouldn´t harm anyone else.
